"Ultimately conservation is about people. If you don't have sustainable development around these (wildlife) parks, then people will have no interest in them, and the parks will not survive."

Nelson Mandela, former President, South Africa

Africa Foundation’s Mission

Africa’s wilderness areas and the wildlife they sustain are precious, but endangered resources. Conservation programmes and responsible ecotourism are preserving them - and playing a vital role in Africa’s future and the prosperity of its people. But for conservation to succeed, the needs of people and animals must both be taken into account so that conservation can be seen to be worthwhile for the rural communities involved. Africa Foundation was set up to do just that. Our mission is:

To facilitate the empowerment and development of people living in or adjacent to protected areas in Africa, by forging unique partnerships between conservation initiatives and communities.

"… the Africa Foundation's mission is as good as it gets."

Howard G. Buffett, President, The Howard G. Buffett Foundation

Who We Are

Africa Foundation is an independent registered non-profit organisation in South Africa and has Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) status. We have allied tax-exempt organisations in the United Kingdom (Africa Foundation – United Kingdom) and the United States of America (Friends of Africa Foundation). We are governed by an independent Board of Trustees, and have been audited annually by KPMG since our inception in 1992. Africa Foundation’s primary focus is on Education, Health Care and Income-Generating Activities.

Africa Foundation was founded by and works in partnership with Conservation Corporation Africa (CC Africa) and its lodges throughout East and Southern Africa. Founded in 1990, CC Africa is a pioneer in sustainable ecotourism, conservation development and community empowerment.

Africa Foundation funds and manages projects based on the needs within our specific communities surrounding CC Africa conservation areas. Together with CC Africa’s lodge teams and in consultation with these communities, Africa Foundation has implemented many successful community empowerment projects. We currently manage six major programmes in addition to over forty smaller projects in South Africa, Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Africa Foundation’s projects assist in the protection of Africa’s great natural wonders (such as the Serengeti in Tanzania, and the Kruger National Park in South Africa) through the socio-economic development of rural populations living in or close to these conservation areas.

Projects are identified through needs analysis studies and community-generated proposals. Africa Foundation provides project management, administration, donor relations, implementation expertise and monitoring and evaluation.

“On the one hand we were devastated to see the deprivation that still exists in many rural communities ten years into South Africa’s democracy, on the other, we were delighted to see that something is being done about it, through Africa Foundation. We were very impressed with what the Foundation has achieved and would be honoured to become patrons of the organisation.”

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond and Mrs Leah Tutu, Patrons, Africa Foundation
