Art for Africa New York

On Monday 21st September 2009, Sotheby’s London hosted the much anticipated Art for Africa™ contemporary art auction.  Developed by Africa Foundation, Art for Africa™ was a unique collection of artworks, donated by some of the foremost contemporary artists from the United Kingdom and South Africa – a special collaboration to raise funds to support orphaned and vulnerable children across Southern and East Africa.

The London sale was unique – it was the first time that Sotheby’s had offered such a comprehensive collection of South African contemporary art, alongside work from leading British artists.  The sale went on to break six saleroom records and raise almost $750,000.  The proceeds are already at work in some of the poorest rural and urban communities in Southern and East Africa, building day-care centres, pre-schools and classrooms.

Art for Africa™ was testament to the overwhelming generosity of the British and South African artists who donated important pieces of their work to our cause.  We were fortunate to receive works from UK artists such as Antony Gormley, Tracey Emin, Marc Quinn, Gavin Turk, Paula Rego and Alison Jackson and from South African artists, William Kentridge, Marlene Dumas, Beezy Bailey, John Meyer, Walter Meyer, David Goldblatt, Pieter Hugo and Dylan Lewis.

We are delighted to be working with Sotheby’s once more, as hosts of Art for Africa™ New York, and grateful to Oliver Barker, Senior International Specialist, Contemporary Art, for agreeing to act as our auctioneer for the second time. We also offer our thanks to The Northern Trust Company for their continuing support as our headline sponsor.

The sale will carry no commission and no buyer’s premium and thanks to the generosity of our sponsors’  in funding the development and execution of Art for Africa™ New York, the money raised will go directly to fund and facilitate more projects supporting some of the most deprived children across Africa.
