Chaenda Secondary School
Interim Report on Chaenda Secondary School, Tanzania – Kitchen & Dining Room plus Equipment
The level of malnutrition in Tanzania continues to be unacceptably high despite the efforts undertaken by the Government. Research has shown that it is more difficult for children to learn without food and nutrition; and it has become necessary for meals to be offered at school. In order to run these programmes effectively, schools need suitable facilities and these needs are usually left to the communities to provide a hugely difficult situation when there are so many other needs that also require attention.
Through the generosity of individual donors, Africa Foundation (UK) has secured funding which will allow one such school; Chaenda Secondary School in Changarawe to realise its dream and build a kitchen and dining hall to enable it to implement its own nutrition programme. The grant will enable the building of a kitchen and dining hall, as well as providing the necessary equipment at Chaenda Secondary School.
Site inspections by Government officials have been carried out and the plans for the building have been thoroughly scrutinise. A number of new conditions and engineering specifications were imposed on the original plans for kitchen and dining facilities. These are intended to improve the skills of local service providers as they become accustomed to Government-regulated standards.
A few weeks ago the final go-ahead was received from Government, and the site for the building was identified. Everyone involved in this project have been very encouraged by the buy-in at Government level especially the improved quality of work that is anticipated from this project.
The project will be implemented in two phases:
Phase 1: Construction of Kitchen and Dining hall
Phase 2: Equipment – tables and chairs, utensils, plates, bowls and kitchen equipment
By securing Government buy-in and support, the sustainability of projects such as this becomes all the more achievable. Communities feel empowered to engage with local Government and although the processes may initially be slow and drawn-out the end result has a fantastic, positive impact on the whole community.
