Learning under trees

Desks and classrooms, fundamental to learning

Education

Classroom Construction

One of the major challenges facing schools in rural communities is overcrowding. Africa Foundation’s consultative approach indicate that cramped conditions impact both the teachers’ ability to work effectively as well as the children’s ability to concentrate and perform. As enrolment at these schools increases, there is a constant need to expand school facilities in an effort to reduce overcrowding. The need is so great at some schools that classes are still being held outdoors under trees.

By building additional classrooms at schools, the number of learners per class is reduced. As a result, the number of learners per desk is also reduced. This improved learning environment has a positive impact on the quality of education these learners receive. A further benefit of the additional classrooms is the commitment from the Department of Education to provide teachers, alleviating the burden on current teachers.

Each set of two adjoining classrooms cost USD 30,000.
