Health Care

Kitchens

In recent years, the South African government has recognised the urgent need as identified by leadership bodies within communities to address the rising poverty and malnourishment prevalent in rural areas; it has become one of the top intervention priorities. This prompted the introduction by government of nutritional programmes at many South African primary schools. Each day one cooked meal is provided to learners, many of whom come to school on empty stomachs. In some cases this is the only cooked meal the children receive daily.

However, due to massive infrastructural constraints many schools cook over open fires that provide little shelter from the elements. This particularly creates a problem during the rainy season as schools are unable to provide meals on rainy days.

Africa Foundation, in response to the call for action from School Governing Bodies (parents and teachers), is building small kitchens at several of these schools to assist with meal preparation. The new kitchens are equipped with cooking equipment and a secure storage room to store supplies.

Each kitchen costs USD 12 000.
