Permaculture Gardens Permaculture and agricultural projects in rural communities encourage entrepreneurial farming using environmentally-friendly methods and healthy living. In many instances the projects not only provide community members with food, but often result in extra income for individuals. Africa Foundation works in partnership with Food and Trees for Africa. Food and Trees for Africa is an organisation that enhances the collaborative approach employed by Africa Foundation. With their knowledge and with our close consultative relationships formed with communities, we are able to do more together. The trusting, valuable and close relationship with the communities enables best practice to emerge. Sustainable use of land and renewable resources to produce food security for schools and communities is the outcome. The permaculture training takes place at regular intervals over 12 months and starts with an intensive six-month training phase, followed by a six-month monitoring and evaluation phase that will ensure the harvest continues from year to year. Schools that fall within this programme are equipped with the skills to carry over seeds and seedlings to the following growing season. Africa Foundation and Food and Trees for Africa have successfully facilitated permaculture gardens at several schools and plans to extend the project. The vegetables harvested from these gardens are used to supplement the daily meals provided to the learners. For many children, this is the only nutritious daily meal that they receive and it is crucial to their growth and development. This one-year intensive project includes training, equipment, seedlings (fruit trees, vegetables, herbs) and fencing and costs USD 30 000. |
